Expanding the Repertoire with Durwynne Hsieh

DurwynneOne of our goals is to expand the clarinet quintet repertoire. To this end, we’ve been working with composers to write pieces for our ensemble. We recently premiered our very first commission—a beautifully lyrical, rhythmic, and colorful three-movement work by Durwynne Hsieh. We describe it as part Debussy and Ravel, part Bartok, and part Bernard Herrmann. It was a privilege to work with Durwynne and bring his creative genius to life. At the premiere, his work received the most enthusiastic response from the audience—even more so than our performance of the Brahms and Weber quintets which were all part of the same program. If you don’t know Durwynne, be sure to check out his website and other compositions at http://durwynne.com. Also, see below for a live video recording from the premier.
